Lucille and Lucille 2

The relationship between Lucille and Lucille Austero is another interesting one in Arrested Development. Lucille Austero, or Lucille 2 as the characters sometimes refer to her, is Lucille Bluth’s one-time social rival who suffers from Vertigo. For those who don’t know, Vertigo is an ailment that makes one feel dizzy, as if they are spinning, while standing completely still. The interactions between Lucille and Lucille 2 are very comical–usually beginning with a series of insults, followed by an awkward pause, then finished with laughter by both parties.

While the two both seems feisty in this clip, it isn’t always the case. This “rivalry” almost always seems one-sided–this is apparent in the last clip of the post. Both the previous clip and the following are from episode four of season one. In this episode, after forgetting his glasses, Buster inadvertently flirts with Lucille Austero, a mistake that leads to a relationship between the two and a rift between Lucille Bluth and Buster (skip to 10:11).

This full episode will give any viewer a good idea of the Bluth family’s relationship with Lucille 2. In this episode, Michael finds out that the Bluth company stocks have been unfrozen and the owners are able to cash them in (which places the stocks back on the market). He sends out a letter, telling everyone that the stocks are unfrozen, but not to sell them. Meanwhile, Buster is conflicted in his relationship with Lucille 2 as his mother doesn’t approve of it. Lucille convinces Michael that it is better for the company if Buster sacrifices this relationship, instead pursuing Starla, the receptionist and company “business model.” Michael later advises him to pursue Lucille 2 again. Going to each of his family members, Michael finds out that most of them have cashed in their stocks and the family has lost control of the company. He eventually finds out that Lucille 2 is the one who bought the stocks. So he takes her out to try to apologize for the situation with Buster. While you can watch the whole episode, which I suggest, the key scenes that include Lucille 2 are at 8:05, 10:32, 17:47, and 18:33-20:54.
